Two of New Jersey’s biggest comedy talents join forces for a one-night-only evening of music and mirth. It’s Two Big Guys from Jersey, a comic tour-de-force combining standup, improv and sketch comedy starring Jerry Lazar and Paul Murphy. It’s a one night stand for the comic giants on March 29, 2007.
The show features a skewed, comic look at the universe, featuring such topics as: the Big Book of Husband Stuff; Secrets of the Universe Revealed; and the 50 Funniest Punchlines of All Time!
“The name ‘Two Big Guys from Jersey’ is a bit of a misnomer,” admits Jerry Lazar, who created and wrote the show with his long-time friend Murphy. “First of all, we’re originally from Long Island. Second, we’re not just big: What we are is fat. Somewhere between ‘Pleasingly Plump’ and ‘Oh God, please don’t let him sit next to me.’”
“Two Big Guys is a one-man show for two actors,” explains Murphy (the one with the beard). “You could describe it as a series of dialogues on the human condition, illuminated by music, sketches, and improvised comedy. You could describe that way, but then no one would come see it. We describe it as an evening of comedy, songs and just plain silliness.” Lazar and Murphy have been performing together and separately for decades. Between them, they have almost 50 years of theatrical experience, and have appeared in more than 250 different plays, musicals, concerts, radio programs and readings in and around the tri-State area. (Murphy is now appearing throughout New Jersey as a 6 foot 3 inch Rabbit, Lazar is currently at liberty). They’re founding members of Lunatic Fringe, New Jersey’s premiere improv comedy troupe, and have performed the National Anthem for the Mets, Bears and Jackals.
